WSOP Champ Busts before 12th Bracelet

Posted by admin | Poker News | Monday 31 May 2010 9:05 am

WSOP champ Phil Hellmuth did not make his 12th bracelet dream come true. He was gunning for the goal in Event 8 at the WSOP. He busted in 15th place, coming close to the final table. Hellmuth leads the pack with 11 WSOP bracelets, with Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan tied for second with 10 each. Hellmuth is arguably the best no limit holdem tournament player in the world. He was in a three way race for the 10th bracelet and won, with the other two quickly catching him, but he stands alone with 11.

Full Tilt Fever: Are You Getting Your Piece of MiniWSOP Action?

Posted by admin | Poker News | Monday 31 May 2010 4:48 am

The talk of the poker industry these days is obviously the 2010 World Series of Poker. Not only is it the biggest poker tournament series in the world, but most of the world’s top players can be found in the Rio Convention Center over the seven weeks of the Series. There will be 56 WSOP bracelets awarded before Vegas settles down, not to mention the most prestigious one of all to be won in November.

Sure, there are non-professional players in Las Vegas for the WSOP, too, but the vast majority of people in the world who play poker cannot make the trip, whether due to work obligations, family responsibilities, or a lack of the kind of bankroll necessary to play even the cheapest events, which require a $1,000 entry. So what is a player to do to get a piece of the action and feel that they are a part of the WSOP excitement?

Full Tilt Poker has the answer: the Mini Series of Poker!

The best part of the Full Tilt offering is that each event is only 1/100th of the buy-ins at the actual WSOP, meaning some tournaments are available for as little as a $5.50 buy-in. The types of events correspond exactly with the tournaments in Las Vegas, even down to the Main Event that will offer a $100 + $9 buy-in for the NLHE event, along with a $600K guarantee. All in all, the Mini Series of Poker boasts of more than $3 million in guarantees, and a guarantee is the one thing that’s lacking in actual WSOP events.

The Mini Series of Poker allows players to compete for a fraction of the cost of WSOP events while in the comfort of your own home. In addition, should players be so inclined as to want to play the Mini Series for even less than the buy-ins listed, there are satellites running for each event, which means entries can be gained for merely some player points or less than a dollar.

Players can grab their portion of that $3 million in guarantees, and winners of each event will also receive a limited-edition Full Tilt Poker Champion’s Watch. And in the process of playing for the win, keep your eyes on the MSOP Leaderboard, where those accumulating the most points through cashes and solid finishes in the Mini Series of Poker can earn a spot on the leaderboard. First place at the end of the series will win a seat to the 2011 World Series of Poker Main Event in Las Vegas next year, a prize package worth $12,000.

If you’re not in Vegas, it’s the perfect opportunity to get a piece of the WSOP action. Even for those in Vegas, why not wind down from the World Series grind – and get some extra practice – by playing in the Mini Series of Poker?

Download Full Tilt Poker now to get started with a new account, and use the bonus code “POKERWORKS” during the deposit process to begin earning 100% back on any amount up to $600.

Praz Bansi Wins Second Bracelet

Posted by admin | Poker News | Sunday 30 May 2010 11:24 pm

Praz Bansi has won the UK’s first WSOP bracelet of 2010 in a $1,500 No Limit Hold’em event. Bansi overcame a mammoth 2,092 players to claim his second bracelet and the $515,501 first prize. This win means that Bansi is the only UK player to ever win two WSOP bracelets in Las Vegas* and reaffirms his status as one of the world’s best tournament players.

Current PokerPlayer UK Player of the year Bansi claimed his first bracelet in a $1,000 No Limit Hold’em event in 2006 and has had some tremendous results since including a win in the first ever GUKPT, 18th place in this year’s PCA and 3rd in the 2009 WSOPE main event. This latest win takes his total tournament winnings to $2,345,276.

Bansi was railed by top UK stars including Sam Trickett, Karl Mahrenholz and James Akenhead on his way to victory and no doubt there will be some fireworks in Las Vegas tonight as the celebrations begin.

Congratulations to Praz from everyone at PokerPlayer.co.uk – and hopefully this is the first of many UK WSOP bracelets this summer!

*PokerStars pro JP Kelly also has two WSOP bracelets but one of those was at the World Series of Poker Europe.

WSOP — Day 1A of the $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em Event

Posted by admin | Poker News | Tuesday 25 May 2010 5:06 am

On Saturday at the 2010 World Series of Poker, the most expensive event of the summer was running simultaneously with one of the cheapest.

While the $50,000 Players Championship, which drew just 116 entrants, was grinding along on Day 2, event no. 3 ($1,500 no-limit hold’em) welcomed 2,601 players on Day 1A.

Reigning WSOP main-event champion Joe Cada was in action among the plethora of entrants. CardPlayer TV caught up with young pro during the first break for an interview.

However, Cada hit the rail during level seven when he moved all in preflop for about 4,500 with the KJ and was called by the A9 of an opponent. The board ran out Q75Q5, offering no help for the 22-year-old.

Other notable eliminations in the Rio’s flood of players include Kara Scott, Adam Schoenfeld, Barry Shulman, Jimmy Fricke, Shannon Shorr, Kathy Liebert, Jeff Madsen, Jean-Robert Bellande, Jon Turner, Brandon Cantu, Gavin Smith and Bernard Lee.

The first of six $1,000 no-limit hold’em events at the pinnacle of the tournament year is teeming with tables still open for Sunday’s Day 1B. Over 2,000 seats are available for anyone interested in a shot at a bracelet.

Steve Sung, last year’s champion in the event, was in action on Day 2 of the Players Championship, but due to his elimination he will have the chance to defend, should he enter on Day 1B.

Notable names that survived to Day 2 in the 4-day event are Amarillo Slim Preston, Vanessa Rousso, Jon Friedberg, Justin Young, Young Phan, Blair Hinkle, Tommy Vedes, Bryan Devonshire, Nancy Todd Tyner, Brent Roberts and Blake Cahail.

The approximately 285 players who survived will join the remaining field from Day 1B at 2:30 PST Monday to play down to a final table.

Check back tomorrow for level-by-level updates during Day 1B of the $1,000 no-limit hold’em event, as well as CardPlayer TV for videos featuring the action at the Rio.

A State Representative from Alabama isn’t fond of online poker and let his feelings be known recently. Alabama Representative Spencer Bachus compared its players to addicts of an illegal drug. Bachus is a Republican member of the Alabama House of Representatives and a member of the House Financial Services Committee. He not only doesn’t like online poker, he stated he will do anything and everything he can to keep online poker from becoming legal in the state and country. World Poker Tour — Theo Jorgensen Wins Grand Prix de Paris

Posted by admin | Poker News | Thursday 13 May 2010 5:40 am

The return of the World Poker Tour Grand Prix de Paris €10,000 no-limit hold’em main event saw 247 players enter the field, which created a total prize pool in excess of €2.3 million. It was the first time the tournament took place as a part of the WPT schedule since 2005. The top 27 players walked away with prize money and the eventual champion, Theo Jorgensen (pictured right), took home the top prize worth $782,818. Here is a look at the chip counts when the final table began:

Seat 1: Mickael Guenni — 538,000
Seat 2: Theo Jorgensen — 2,693,000
Seat 3: Antoine Amourette — 489,000
Seat 4: Per Linde — 584,000
Seat 5: Jimmy Ostensson — 436,000
Seat 6: Nourredine Aïtaleb — 810,000
Seat 7: Fabrice Touil — 1,183,000
Seat 8: Arnaud Mattern — 678,000

Jimmy Ostensson was the first player to fall when he shoved all in for 354,000 preflop on the button and Fabrice Touil made the call from the small blind. Ostensson held pocket nines, and Touil held A 6. The board ran out K-J-4-A-6, and Ostensson was sent home in eighth place with $86,982. Arnaud Mattern was the next to fall after he moved all in preflop and Antoine Amourette made the call with pocket aces. Mattern held A-Q, and he was sent to the rail after a J-9-3-2-8 board. Mattern took home $101,480 as the seventh-place finisher. Only one more player was eliminated before the dinner break, and it was Nourredine Aïtaleb, who was awarded $115,971 in sixth place. Per Linde held pocket queens when Aïtaleb moved all in with A-J, and the board brought no help to save him.

Action after the dinner break was dominated by double-ups and one huge pot that changed the course of the tournament before the next elimination. Jorgensen was all in for 1,635,000, and Amourette made the call. Jorgensen held pocket kings, and Amourette showed down pocket sevens. The board fell 5-4-5-10-3, and Jorgensen won the huge hand to grow his stack to 3.3 million and Amourette was left with 600,000.

The eliminations began again when Fabrice Touil moved all in with A-8 and Jorgensen made the call with J-8. Jorgensen was dominated, but the board delivered a jack and an 8 to give him two pair and the pot. Touil was eliminated in fifth place, and he was awarded $173,963. Mikhael Guenni was on the chopping block next, and after he survived multiple all-ins, his final stand took place. He was all in preflop for 405,000 with pocket fives and Jorgensen made the call with pocket nines. The board changed nothing, and $231,949 was Guenni’s parting gift in fourth place. Just a half hour later, Linde moved all in preflop for 415,000 and Jorgensen made the call. He held K-J and Linde held 7-5. The board gave Jorgensen a straight, and he eliminated yet another opponent. Linde took home $289,935 in prize money in third place.

On the third hand of heads-up play, Amourette moved all in for 600,000 preflop and Jorgensen had him covered with 6 million. Amourette held K 6 and Jorgensen held A K. The board ran out J 6 4 A 5, and Jorgensen won the hand and the tournament. Amourette took home $405,906 as the runner up and Jorgensen was awarded $782,818 in prize money along with his first WPT title.

“Wow, I’m on top of the world, it means so much to win a WPT title,” said Jorgensen after the win.

Final-Table Results:

1: Theo Jorgensen — $782,818
2: Antoine Amourette — $405,906
3: Per Linde — $289,935
4: Mickael Guenni — $231,949
5: Harry Touil — $173,963
6: Nourredine Aitaleb — $115,971
7: Arnaud Mattern — $101,480
8: Jimmy Ostensson — $86,982

The next WPT event will be the WPT Spanish Championship that will be hosted in Barcelona, Spain from May 19-23.

Super Poker Sunday 05/16: Marshall1121 Wins Big on Full Tilt 750K Guarantee

Posted by admin | Poker News | Thursday 13 May 2010 12:32 am

Another Sunday, another monster day in the world of online poker. But it wasn’t all in the Sunday majors, as SCOOP and MiniFTOPS took some of the credit for the surge in online poker players.

The MiniFTOPS on Full Tilt Poker was hosting its Main Event, but for the last night of the series, the site put the $200K Double Deuce back on the schedule, giving it a full four tournaments besides the MiniFTOPS wrap. That led to a solid week on Full Tilt and the biggest prize of the week going to Marshall1121, the winner of the $750K Guarantee, who took home more than $132K for the victory.

The Spring Championship of Online Poker was also hosting its wrap-up event, but another one was on the schedule along with the Main Event, prompting PokerStars to keep the Sunday Warm-Up and Sunday Million off the roster for another week. With the removal of the Million, it left Full Tilt open to grab the biggest “regulars” prize of the week, though SCOOP was boasting of multi-million dollar prize pools in its final events.

Out of the regular events, only one sponsored team pro made it to a final table, and that was Johannes Strassmann of PokerStars, who made it to seventh place in the Sunday 500. The rest of the Sunday fame and glory was left to lesser known pros and amateurs who were undoubtedly happy to add a Sunday majors final table to their list of accomplishments. For a list of all the final table information from Sunday, May 16, see below.

PokerStars

Sunday Warm-Up
The last night of SCOOP meant one more night without the Sunday Warm-Up, one of several tournaments ripped from the lineup of regulars to make way for one of the biggest online tournament series of the year. It is scheduled to return next week.

Sunday 1/4 Million
With many players in the online world concentrating on SCOOP tournaments on PokerStars – or even the MiniFTOPS Main Event on Full Tilt – the Sunday 1/4 Million still had a reasonable turnout, as not many players could walk away from the $10 + $1 buy-in that guaranteed players at least $250K in the prize pool. When 28,100 people signed up, though, the pool grew to $281,000, which gave 4,500 players the chance to cash. And in the end, ucosmo survived the entire field, including leoforostheo, the second place finisher, to take home more than $25K for the feat.

1st place:    ucosmo ($25,290.00)
2nd place:    leoforostheo ($17,393.90)
3rd place:    Raben99 ($12,645.00)
4th place:    ELGRAND4 ($9,835.00)
5th place:    COBOTCH ($7,025.00)
6th place:    pj0ern ($4,215.00)
7th place:    anthonyshark ($2,810.00)
8th place:    Leonishe ($2,107.50)
9th place:    Gee Que 909 ($1,405.00)

D.N.G. Sunday Special
The newest addition to the regular Sunday majors lineup has quickly become one of the players’ favorites, with its bargain buy-in of $55 and a $300K guarantee. The offshoot of the Daily Ninety Grand tournaments finds its way to big prize pools on Sunday, and when 6,432 players signed up this week, the pool jumped to $321,600. The money was given out to the last 990 people in the tournament, but in the end, bullklaus outlasted everyone, including second place finisher inferno053, to take down the $40K first place prize.

1st place:    bullklaus ($40,200.00)
2nd place:    inferno053 ($27,271.68)
3rd place:    Pokeryugo ($18,331.20)
4th place:    Darylll ($14,793.60)
5th place:    MYMSGREG ($11,577.60)
6th place:    alcswab ($8,361.60)
7th place:    nellie11 ($5,628.00)
8th place:    matthew119 ($3,698.40)
9th place:    Jackballs2 ($2,251.20)

Sunday Million
The biggest of the Sunday tournaments on all sites is the Sunday Million, but again it was taken off the regular schedule so players could concentrate fully on SCOOP events. The massively popular tournament with its $1.5 million guarantee will return next week, ending its hiatus.

Sunday 500
The Sunday500 is one of the biggest buy-in tournaments on the Sunday regulars roster, and though there were numerous other high buy-in events to play this week, players came out for the $500K guarantee with the $500 + $30 buy-ins. The total registration number was 1,056, which pushed the prize pool to $528,000 and allowed the last 153 players to be paid. PokerStars Pro Johannes Strassmann made it to the final table but finished in seventh, leaving Comandr_Cool to run away with the win by ultimately defeating probirs to grab the $91K for first place.

1st place:    Comandr_Cool ($91,132.80)
2nd place:    probirs ($66,000.00)
3rd place:    doulas12 ($50,160.00)
4th place:    HoldumGod ($36,748.80)
5th place:    caio_pimenta ($26,136.00)
6th place:    nickpr ($20,856.00)
7th place:    J.Strassmann ($15,576.00)
8th place:    WatchTheSea ($10,296.00)
9th place:    kleath ($5,808.00)

Sunday 2nd Chance
Last week, we reported that the 2nd Chance event was off the regular Sunday schedule because of SCOOP tournaments, but we were mistaken. (Gasp!) We simply missed it. But not this week! This week, we’re happy to report that the $250K guarantee brought 1,547 players into the action for only $200 + $15 each, and the subsequent prize pool was a solid $309,400. The final 180 players made it into the money, and the last two players standing were ramondemon77 and lhetmein. The battle ended when ramondemon77 landed the final blow and won almost $56K for grabbing the weekly title.

1st place:    ramondemon77 ($55,692.00)
2nd place:    lhetmein ($40,222.00)
3rd place:    Trapomp ($30,940.00)
4th place:    Akumila ($23,205.00)
5th place:    smerks ($16,243.50)
6th place:    oncommand ($13,149.50)
7th place:    fhaugen ($10,055.50)
8th place:    OGURI ($6,961.50)
9th place:    shaundeeb ($4,331.60)

Full Tilt Poker

The Sunday Brawl
The first of the Full Tilt Sunday offerings brought players to the Sunday Brawl, with its $240 + $16 buy-in and $40 bounties on each player. The $400K guarantee brought 2,647 players to the tables, which is per the usual numbers, and the prize pool was subsequently set at $529,400. That gave the last 279 players in the tournament the chance to cash, but it was asudetrefla who ended up making it to heads-up and defeating ZiZaZeppo to take down the Brawl title and more than $107K in prize money.

1st place:    asudetrefla ($107,468.20)
2nd place:    ZiZaZeppo ($69,351.40)
3rd place:    Ship it Nubs ($51,351.80)
4th place:    da_professional ($38,646.20)
5th place:    tblightning3 ($26,999.40)
6th place:    xxxLIKANxxx ($17,999.60)
7th place:    ProbBluffingYou ($12,176.20)
8th place:    nirvanakc ($8,470.40)
9th place:    nypitbull24 ($6,352.80)

$750K Guarantee

With several main events running, the biggest of the Full Tilt Sunday events suffered, as its $750K guarantee for the $200 + $16 buy-in only attracted 3,497 players. That forced Full Tilt to contribute to the prize pool to make it an even $750K, but it gave the players a bit of an overlay. in the end, 522 players were paid, and Marsall1121 eliminated sampson724 to capture the title and walk away with a cool $133K for the win.

1st place:    Marshall1121 ($132,787.50)
2nd place:    sampson724 ($80,250.00)
3rd place:    DwayneStacey ($52,500.00)
4th place:    pairAShilton ($41,400.00)
5th place:    TheOracle8 ($31,050.00)
6th place:    Bond18 ($23,025.00)
7th place:    anvil510 ($17,250.00)
8th place:    squeezeboxx ($13,500.00)
9th place:    zoedoe ($10,050.00)

The Sunday Mulligan
Players seemed excited for the Sunday Mulligan on the Full Tilt lineup, with its $200 + $16 buy-in and a $200K guarantee. There were 1,235 takers this week, which surpassed the guarantee and made for a $247,000 prize pool and set aside payouts for the final 135 players in the event. $200K Double Deuce
When the Double Deuce was taken off the schedule during the first part of the MiniFTOPS series, it was assumed it wouldn’t return until the series was over. But it did return on May 16, as MiniFTOPS was winding down with its Main Event. Players were glad to see the Deuce back on the schedule, but the numbers were down as registration only hit 8,896, despite its $20 + $2 buy-in for a sizable $200K guarantee. Full Tilt put in some cash to give the players an overlay and make the prize pool an even $200K, and 1,350 players were paid from it. Ultimately, ConfusedPenguin beat out Callisto after coming to a financial agreement, and Confused Penguin shipped the title and $31K in prize money.
